"Unfortunately we do not know the height of block B... thus we are unable to absolutely position them to the top or bottom.

That's the key factor that makes this impossible. If you knew the height of B, you could margin-top A whatever that difference is of course.

And since there is no Float: Top; or Float: Bottom; And you can't do this through normal HTML flow. You need to use Absolute Positioning to make your footer your header.

So the only bit of info you need to make this possible is the height of B.

If I were tasked with doing this, (and couldn't talk the client out of it or find an alternate solution) I see no way with variable height block level elements to accomplish this without using JS.

I could do this fairly easily in a few lines of JQuery.

Relatively positioned parent container, absolutely position divs, use JS to get the dynamic height and set the offset.

I can't think of a way to do a pure css solution, unless you set fixed heights.

Thanks, Rob! I thought the conversation was interesting. I would have been leery of taking an in-house role with a startup but this allows me to do it without giving up on my dream of having my own company as well.

I think it's a great idea. I've always stayed in house rather than contract for the stability and benefits and then done a bit of contracting on the side. This sounds like a cool hybrid of the variety contracting gives with some of the predictability and ability to see a project through the end an in house role does. Congrats!
